New Web-cast Information Systems Graduate Program

A new graduate program is being offered by the University of Maine that will allow qualifying Maine citizens to take live and delayed web-cast courses in their homes or offices.  These are regular graduate courses offered on the Orono campus that you will now be able to tap into.  A high speed cable line, such as offered by Adelphia, is required to see and hear the classroom presentations but the $50 monthly fee is a lot cheaper than quitting your job to go back to the university.

The first complete graduate program offered live on your desktop by the University of Maine is the "Graduate Certificate in Information Systems."  The six courses within this program form the core of the new Master of Science in Information Systems.  Formal admission to the graduate school is required for either program but up to two courses may be taken prior to formal admission.  While the program is open to individuals with far ranging undergraduate degrees, prerequisite courses in programming, calculus, and statistics may be stumbling blocks for some potential applicants.  Courses being offered live to your desktop starting on September 4 include Engineering Databases, Software Engineering, and Information Systems Law.  The primary faculty involved in teaching the courses come from Business, Computer Science and Spatial Information Science and Engineering.  Distance student enrollments are limited to twenty students and if you want to enroll you should get cable access now if you don't already have it.

To sign up for the actual fall courses, consult http://www.ume.maine.edu/~ced/ced and register under "DE Fall 2001 Online Courses" for COS 598, SIE 451 or SIE 525.
